At Neurometric, our mission has always been to make AI more efficient, accessible, and cost-effective. We spend our days helping developers route traffic to the best models for the lowest price or shortest latency. But lately, the AI landscape has shifted in a way that concerns us.
We’ve seen what happens when the world becomes dependent on a single proprietary model: prices fluctuate, performance “drifts,” and beloved models—like the original GPT-4o—get deprecated or changed without warning.
We believe AI needs to be free and open so that this doesn’t happen. That’s why we are launching a community-driven initiative to create a high-performance, open-source replacement for GPT-4o. And we’re calling on you to help us build it.
The Vision: A Model You Can Keep Forever
We aren’t just talking about a “free tier.” We are talking about true ownership.
Our goal is to post-train one of Arcee’s largest and most capable models specifically to match or exceed the performance of GPT-4o. Once completed, this model will be released under the Apache 2.0 license.

No Take-Backs: Unlike proprietary APIs, no one can “retire” this model or take it away from you once it’s in your hands.
We Need 10,000 Requests and 1,000 Contributors
Training a model of this caliber is a massive undertaking, and we want to ensure the community is as invested as we are. To greenlight this project, we’ve set two milestones:
10,000 Sign-ups: We need to know the demand is there.
1,000 Data Contributors: We need a dedicated group to help contribute training data to ensure the model’s reasoning and performance match the 4o standard.
If we hit these numbers, Neurometric will put our resources behind the training and optimization process to bring this model to life.
Why We Are Doing This
You might know us for our optimization tools that cut AI costs by routing calls to the most efficient models. This project is a natural extension of that philosophy.
While we love helping you save money on OpenAI and Anthropic, the ultimate “cost-saving” measure is an open-source model that performs at a flagship level. By supporting the “Free-4o” initiative, we are helping build an ecosystem where developers aren’t locked into a single vendor’s roadmap.
